Looking for fulfilling travel ventures that nourish both body and spirit? Cruise South offers carefully chosen guides to meaningful destinations.

I travelled to the American South to relax – just some sunshine, sweet tea, and quiet mornings to help me unwind from the dynamic life in the UK. I wasn’t looking for big adventures, just a slower pace and a bit of warmth. But when you travel, you often find more than you expect.

A couple of years ago, UK citizens took 86.2 million trips abroad. Of these, 3.9 million visited the United States of America, making it the sixth most popular place for British travellers. The appeal of the American experience continues to grow, especially during its unique moments.

The South is known for its warmth and rich culture, which I found true. What started as an easy getaway turned into something deeper, giving me unexpected insights during my trip.

Here are three memorable surprises from my journey in the Southern U.S. that stayed with me long after I returned.

Unexpectedly Soulful Moments from My Southern Journey

Here are the three unexpectedly soulful moments from my southern journey:

  • Embracing Stillness in the Blue Ridge Mountains

My adventure commenced in the enchanting Blue Ridge Mountains, renowned for their serene beauty and meandering trails. One crisp morning, I laced up my hiking boots, ready for what I thought would be a simple stroll along the Black Ridge Trail. However, as I stepped into the embrace of the fog-draped path, the world around me transformed.

With each step, the narratives of the lush greenery surrounded me, leading me to a breathtaking hidden viewpoint. I stood there, awestruck by the hills before me. They stretched far and wide, covered in soft shades of green and gold. At that moment, everything felt quiet. The only sound was a bird calling in the distance.

Recent data shows that the UK government announced that being in nature can provide over £400 billion in long-term health benefits. This includes improving mental health and reducing pressure on the NHS. While I enjoyed a quiet moment, I understood why. The calm I felt was not just a temporary escape – it was refreshing, stabilising, and more effective than any wellness app or digital detox.

I felt a deep connection revive within me, bringing a calming peace that I didn’t realise I needed. The Blue Ridge Mountains, with their subtle yet captivating allure, reminded me that sometimes, the most profound experiences come simply from being present and embracing the moment’s beauty.

  • Finding Joy at a New Orleans Gospel Brunch

New Orleans pulses with its distinctive rhythm, and this vibrancy shines brightest at a Sunday gospel brunch. I found myself at the House of Blues, where the tempting aroma of Southern cuisine mingled seamlessly with the uplifting sounds of gospel music.

The choir’s harmonies filled the air as I indulged in shrimp and grits, wrapping everyone in a cocoon of joyful festivity. People who didn’t know each other became friends as they clapped and sang along to the music. Each note created a shared experience of happiness. It was more than just a meal – it was a joyful celebration that nourished the body and the soul.

In the first half of 2025, over 286,000 visitors from the UK came to New Orleans. They were drawn by the city’s lively cultural festivals, like Mardi Gras, and its rich musical history. This increase indicates that people worldwide are excited about New Orleans’ unique experiences, including gospel brunches that offer more than just entertainment.

Amidst this lively setting, I was struck by the power of community and the unadulterated happiness that comes from communal experiences. The gospel brunch was a beautiful reminder of life’s richness – a heartfelt festivity celebrating every moment we shared.

  • A Moment of Reflection in Savannah

In Savannah, I ended up joining my cousin for a Bible study at her local parish, Savannah Orthodox. I was hesitant at first – but the candlelight, the gentle voices, and the steady rhythm of scripture readings stirred something in me. It wasn’t a grand revelation, but it felt like a moment of stillness I had not realised I needed.

The gathering felt warm and welcoming, creating a perfect atmosphere for peaceful reflection. It reminded me to slow down and be kind to ourselves as we reflect and reconnect.

Conclusion

I didn’t expect these experiences, but they were exactly what I needed. We often find profound insights about ourselves in quiet moments during our travels.

The unexpected joys in the South reminded me that meaningful journeys don’t always go as planned. They develop slowly and unexpectedly in the moments between food, music, and connection. Sometimes, those surprises stay with us the longest, long after we unpack our bags.
